On a cool October afternoon, as the sun peeks out between the clouds, 91精选鈥檚 campus is nice and quiet鈥攕ave for the spot tucked behind the听Tibstra听Parking Lot. At The Shack, next to the Mail and Print Center, there is a food truck, tables and chairs. A vibrant blue pi帽ata swings from a wooden beam, while speakers resound with upbeat music. There鈥檚 dancing, food, musical chairs, and a lot of laughter. It鈥檚 Hispanic Heritage Month, and the Sabor Latino Club has come forth to celebrate this at 91精选 with all its might!听

Even before the pandemic, the club had been inactive. Yet after a period of dormancy, the members of Sabor Latino are back. Now that things have returned to a more normal state after the pandemic hit, the club is eager to step back into the light. Sabor Latino desires to invite all of 91精选 to come experience and learn about the Hispanic culture. Melissa Ballesteros 鈥�24, president of Sabor Latino, said, 鈥淲e hope to have events that teach people, 鈥極h, this is the type of things Latinos do,鈥� as well has having fun together and joining and thinking.鈥� This Hispanic Heritage Month event was that big first step into that.听

This was the first time in Sabor Latino鈥檚 history to celebrate Hispanic heritage as a club and with everyone on campus. 鈥淪o far it hasn鈥檛 been done in the past years,鈥� said Ballesteros. A big smile grew on her face as she continued, 鈥淏ut we鈥檙e trying to start that.鈥�听

The members of the club听are eager to become more visible to 91精选 again. 鈥淚 saw people wanting to actually learn about our culture, which is something really inspirational!鈥� said听Ballesteros.听听

Near the end of the event, everyone gathers round the blue pi帽ata. 鈥淥ur favorite thing to do is laugh,鈥� said Ballesteros, with a laugh of her own. As people become dizzy striking at the pi帽ata and sticks break off one by one in comical fashion, there is no denying that. The pi帽ata breaks at last and the candy all flies out. People joke and chatter happily with one another, and the music continues to play loudly in the background.听

Sabor听Latino is excited to听express its culture, and that is what it did with this event and听is eager to invite all of 91精选 to come along. 鈥淲e鈥檙e all a big family in the end!鈥澨�听
