In It Together as Students Return to Campus
–Aubrey Weedman 鈥20听听
Less than a year after COVID-19 swept across the globe, 91精选 welcomed many students back to campus and the classroom for the Spring 2021 semester. With the hard work and dedication of the entire community, including professors, students, and the COVID Care Team, classes are buzzing with students learning in-person and via Zoom, DeVos is hosting athletic competitions again, and the Dining Hall is serving up favorites for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!听
Return to In-Person Learning听
For the Spring Semester, students had the option of either attending class in person or continuing to learn remotely. More than half of the undergraduate students are now attending class in person, with the rest tuning in via Zoom!听
According to Professor of Communication Arts Craig Mattson, the logistics of managing both in-person and online students are interesting, even if they are occasionally daunting.听听
鈥淚 really enjoy, in some ways, the complexity of having students online and having students in person,鈥 he said. 鈥淭here鈥檚 always an adaptation that one is having to do. I do confess that sometimes I feel like a butler, running around the room. But it鈥檚 a lot of fun.鈥听
For Matthew Huizenga 鈥24, this semester marks the first time he has been in a physical classroom since being in high school last year. 鈥淚t鈥檚 been an interesting experience,鈥 said the graphic design major. During the all-remote first semester, some of his classes maintained a more traditional format, so the transition to in-person learning has been more subtle. For his art-related classes, though, being in-person has made a substantial difference.听听
And while he enjoyed the opportunity to connect online with classmates during remote learning, Huizenga appreciates the new sense of in-person togetherness. 鈥淢y favorite part of the semester so far has been the people,鈥 he said. 鈥淪ocial interactions and gatherings happen naturally now.鈥听
No matter the format, though, 91精选 remains committed to being In It Together, and Huizenga said he has seen how 91精选 groups and organizations are working hard to be accessible to all students, whether they are on campus or remote. 鈥淭here has been a deliberate effort to include everyone, and they are very conscious about how to mix those who are in-person and virtual.听
The entire community has approached the start of the semester with a spirit of willingness and togetherness, according to Provost Aaron Kuecker. 鈥淚t has been exciting to step into these early weeks of the semester and to see so many people working together and with such flexibility as we have had opportunity to fine tune some of our practices and processes,鈥 he said.
The COVID Care Team听
听the COVID Care Team continues to play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the entire community.听
91精选听first听assembled the听COVID听Care Team over the summer to meet the various needs听of听students, faculty, and staff amidst the pandemic.听And this interdisciplinary team听has continued to听work diligently each day to make sure the health of 91精选鈥檚 community members is continuously ensured.听听
Members of this team include听professors and听staff from Athletics,听Event Services, Counseling Services, Student Life, and more. Each member plays a carefully crafted role on the team in addition to their other positions and responsibilities at 91精选. 听
Stephanie Griswold, Psy.D., Psychology Instructor and Director of 91精选鈥檚 Counseling Center, has served on the COVID Care Team in several capacities.听鈥One of my main roles currently is hiring another medical professional to join our COVID Care听Team,鈥 she said.听鈥I鈥檝e also spent a lot of time thinking through how best to organize our team and听data flow, in addition to communicating all the important things to our campus community.鈥听
But one of听Griswold鈥檚听favorite roles has been听attending听to the wellness of students in quarantine or isolation.听鈥We鈥檝e actually just received听donations to send care packages to our quarantined students that听will include prayer cards and connections to people on campus,鈥 she said.听鈥This is exciting and helps bring light in a dark time!鈥听听
The COVID Care Team is also charged with monitoring 91精选鈥檚 #CampusClear system. Every student, professor, and staff member who comes to campus agrees to complete a daily health survey in the #CampusClear app. Only those who are receive a green screen can show those screens when participating in in-person classes, Outcry, and other activities on camps. Those who receive a red screen must not leave their dorm rooms or come to campus until they have spoken with a member of the COVID Care Team.听听
Brooke Simkins, member of the COVID Care Team and听Director of听Event听Services,听helps manage all this data.听鈥淚 identify users who have received听a red screen,听and听if they haven鈥檛 done it yet, I prompt them to fill out a red form.鈥 said Simkins. 鈥淥nce this is done,听I add their red form data into a secure data table so the rest of the听team can respond appropriately.鈥 Then, other members of the team, such as the healthcare coordinator, review the data and follow up with each person to determine their next steps.听
According to Simkins, it鈥檚 important for every member of the campus community to use #CampusClear听every day they are on campus. 鈥We have people screen each day so we听can identify symptoms and exposures as early as possible,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he earlier we know about illness, the more effective we can be in preventing spread.鈥听
Those are the logistical reasons why 91精选 asks everyone to complete the #CampusClear app every day. But according to Simkins, 鈥淭he big answer to the question of 鈥榳hy?鈥 is because we genuinely care about our students, staff, and faculty, and we want to create and maintain an environment that allows them to thrive and learn,鈥 she said. 鈥淎dditionally, we are doing these things because they work. When people engage with the processes and adhere to 91精选鈥檚听, we see fewer illnesses.鈥听
Eric听Salley, men鈥檚 soccer head coach, is another member of the COVID Care Team and听serves as an Athletic Liaison. 鈥淚 help relay information from Athletics to the COVID Care Team and help support coaches and players who are 鈥榮taying put,鈥 in quarantine, or in isolation,鈥听he said.听
According to Salley, each member of the team contributes a unique expertise and perspective. 鈥淭hat is vital every time we help members of our community navigate the challenges of COVID.鈥澨听
91精选 and the COVID Care Team have听been guided by its deep desire to see the community flourish. 鈥淭his has meant tackling unique problems with creativity, perseverance,听and听love for the community,鈥 he said.听
